Personal Care Products FAQ

The NSF/ANSI 305 Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients was developed as part of the ongoing efforts of a number of interested parties to encourage participation in the manufacturing of personal care products using organically grown ingredients within the supply chain and to address issues on chemical processes, terminology, commercial availability, product composition, calculations, and labeling. The scope of this standard includes, but is not limited to, rinse-off/leave-on personal care products, cosmetic products, oral care and personal hygiene products.

Third-party certification of personal care products to the NSF/ANSI-305 Standard provides consumer confidence. Products certified meet the organic percentage requirements and only contain non-organic ingredients that are allowed under the Standard. The Standard utilizes the existing framework of the National Organic Program and extends the use of ingredients that the NOP regulation does not allow due to the type of processing used to make functional ingredients.

Oregon Tilth is an NSF licensed certifier to the NSF/ANSI 305 Organic Personal Care Products to certify products that contain a minimum of 70 percent organic ingredients. This standard which defines labeling, formulation, and marketing requirements for «contains organic ingredients» claims. NSF/ANSI 305 requires that USDA National Organic Program (NOP) or EU equivalent certified ingredients be used. This Standard also provides a way to certify «allowed» synthesized organic ingredients. Like the NOP regulations, the NSF/ANSI 305 includes requirements on organic ingredients, allowed processes, production practices and labeling.

Please note: This application is for certification under the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard.

If you are seeking certification under the USDA NOP only, please fill out the following applications.
